If you've ever considered tutoring, you've probably wondered: "What actually happens in an Orton-Gillingham tutoring session?" And more importantly, "Will it actually help?"
Orton-Gillingham is your typical tutoring session.
Effective reading tutoring looks very different from homework help, especially for struggling readers.
Orton-Gillingham style tutoring is often referred to as the gold standard for reading intervention. Our sessions are tailored to every student. What works for one student may not work for another. While we have a scope and sequence, there is no rush to the next topic. If a student struggles, we stay there and keep chipping away until confidence is achieved. We use our bodies. Not only do we get up and move as much as we can, but we also utilize hand motions and activities to help those tricky topics really sink in. Lastly, we also dive into the why. Orton- Gillingham is excellent at breaking down our language into manageable pieces so students understand how it works.
Biggest change parents notice:
It's not just the reading improvement.
Students begin to become more confident in themselves. We provide a space that says, "We know this is really hard, but we believe in you, and won't stop until you get it right." Students become willing to try, make mistakes, and realize it is just part of the journey. They develop a growth mindset. They actually begin to become LESS frustrated in their learning. If you are unsure if your student is behind, this post may help.
For local families:
If you're in St. George, Utah, I offer in-person reading tutoring using the Orton-Gillingham method designed specifically for elementary students and struggling readers.
