Is My Child Behind in Reading? What to Look for (and When to Act)

It's a quiet worry a lot of parents carry:

"Is my child behind in reading... or am I overthinking it?"

If you've wondered this, you're not alone.

Signs your child may be struggling or behind:

Every child learns at a different pace. Here are some signs worth noticing:

  • Difficulty sounding out words

  • Guessing

  • Difficulty rhyming

  • Trouble remembering letter sounds

  • Avoiding reading

  • Below grade-level expectations

The tricky part...

Schools do their best, but they have a lot going on.

Some children fall through the cracks. Some students don't get the time and repetition on a subject before moving on. Some students learn to blend in and miss out on help. A student's WIN time or IEP may be ineffective.

The problem is...

Reading builds on itself. When gaps go unaddressed, they usually don't disappear. So, the quicker you act, the easier those gaps can be identified and closed.

Summer is a window of opportunity!

Without the pressure of school, summer allows kids to:

  • Learn at their own pace

  • Spend time on those tricky subjects and build a stronger foundation

  • Build confidence for the next school year

For local families:

If you are in St. George, UT, and wondering if your child needs extra support, I offer one-on-one reading tutoring designed to meet kids where they are. Whether your child needs to catch up or just gain confidence, summer is the best time to start.
